ANDREAS LEND began his musical studies at the Tallinn Music High School in the cello class of Leili Leichter. He earned his Master’s degree at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre (EMTA) under Professor Peeter Paemurru and furthered his studies at the Sibelius Academy in Finland with Professors Hannu Kiiski and Heikki Pekkarinen (2005–2006). In addition, Lend has participated in masterclasses given by many internationally renowned cellists, including Frans Helmerson, David Geringas, Martin Ostertag, Jan-Erik Gustafsson, Niklas Ullner, Marko Ylönen, Marcio de Oliveira Pinto, Alexander Ivashkin, and Jens Peter Maintz, among others. Lend has successfully taken part in numerous competitions and received several awards: First Prize and Grand Prix at the international competition-festival Renaissance (Armenia, 2013), First Prize at the ESTA Estonian National Competition for Young Violinists and Cellists (2004), Third Prize at the Augusts Dombrovskis International String Players Competition (Riga, 2002), and laureate at the International Liezen Cello Competition (Austria, 2000). He has also been awarded scholarships from the prestigious International Holland Music Session Summer Academy (2009 and 2010) and received the PLMF award Young Musician 2011. Lend was selected as a member of the European Union Youth Orchestra (principal conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy, 2007), with which he has performed throughout Europe. As a soloist, he has appeared with orchestras such as the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, Tallinn Chamber Orchestra, Camerata Nordica Chamber Orchestra, and the Youth Orchestra of America, among others. He made his solo debut in the Great Hall of the Cologne Philharmonie in 2024. Lend worked as a cellist with the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra from 2006 to 2016 and has been a member of the Estonian National Opera Orchestra since 2016, where he has served as principal cellist since 2023. In addition, he is a member of the string quartet Prezioso and the Estonian Cello Ensemble and is active as both a soloist and chamber musician in many other ensembles. Andreas Lend is a scholarship holder of the PLMF Musicians’ Fund.
