Arete Teemets has studied singing at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre (EAMT) with Assoc. Prof. Nadja Kurem and at the Conservatorio di Musica Santa Cecilia with maestra Rebecca Berg obtaining her MA degree with maximum grades. In 2010 she was awarded the First Prize at Santa Chiara Classical Singing Competition in the category of sacred music, winning the Chori Praefecti award. She has also received the Third Prize from the International Opera Singers Competition 2011 in Spoleto (Concorso Comunita’ Europea). In the same year she was awarded with the prize of Premio Via Vittoria which is given to the best singer of Conservatorio di Musica Santa Cecilia. In 2014 Arete Teemets won 1st prize at Concours Flame in Paris. In 2015 she received the Richard Wagner Society Bayreuth Scholarship. In Estonia she has been awarded the PLMF Marje and Kuldar Sink award “Young Singer 2010”.
Arete Teemets has participated in the master classes of Gabriella Tucci, Renato Bruson, Elisabeth Norberg Schulz, Ines Salazar, Joanna Kozlovska and Karan Armstrong. She has collaborated with such conductors and pianists as Carlo Palleschi, Andreas Kowalewitz, Frédérick Haas, Rupert Dussmann, Marco Boemi, Enza Ferrari, Marco Forgione, Hilary Griffiths, Jurjen Hempel, William Kunhardt and Mihkel Poll. Her opera roles include Fanny (Rossini — La cambiale di matrimonio), Madama Vezzosa (Ciampi — Le Favola dei Tre Gobbi), Lisetta (Leo — La Zingaretta), Kate Pinkerton (Puccini — Madama Butterfly), Rosina (Mozart — La Finta Semplice), Suor Angelica and Genovieffa (Puccini — Suor Angelica), Nella (Puccini — Gianni Schicchi), Sandrina (Mozart — La Finta Giardiniera), Governess (Britten — The Turn of the Screw) etc. Arete Teemets is also highly valued as an oratorio soloist, having sung solo parts in Vivaldi’s «Gloria», «Magnificat», J.S.Bach’s «St. John Passion» BWV 245, «Coffee Cantata» BWV 211, cantata «Ach Gott, wie manches Herzeleid» BWV 58, Charpentier’s «Te Deum», «Messe de Minuit», Mozart’s «Missa brevis in G major», Handel’s «Resurrezione» etc. She has performed at Teatro Lirico Sperimentale di Spoleto, Estonian National Opera, EAMT Opera Studio etc. In addition she has appeared with the world-famous Italian baritone Renato Bruson celebrating his 50 years on opera stages. In 2012 she had a solo recital at the largest opera festival in Estonia, “Saaremaa Opera Days”, being the youngest opera singer ever to have appeared in such a concert.
In 2014 she performed with the renowned Belgian early music ensemble Ausonia with a programme of Rameau’s music at the Abbaye de Saint-Michel en Thiérache Festival (France) and the Tallinn Chamber Music Festival (Estonia), continuing this cooperation in 2015 at the Festival de Musique Ancienne de Ribeauvillé (France) with a programme of Biber-Froberger-Rosenmüller.
